A Message from Marnie...
In looking to the year ahead, I think about the events brought me to Houston. For those of you who do not know me, my family left New Orleans one Saturday morning nearly five years ago. We expected to return home in three days, but little did we know that a storm named Katrina would change the world we knew. We were certainly one of the lucky ones. Our home was not damaged and my husband was able to continue serving clients from Houston. In the mad scramble to find a place to live, schools for Patrick and Miles, and medical care for my uncle there was little time to feel sorry for myself. I was certainly upset at having to leave my home town, family, and childhood memories, but my fears of being swallowed whole in one of the largest cities in the country were soon laid to rest.
After being in Houston for a few months and realizing what great schools were available in Spring Branch, I told Edwin to do whatever he had to do to make our relocation permanent. I never thought I would willingly leave the city that I loved so much, but it’s amazing what you will do for the benefit of your children. I feel so lucky to have landed in a community that welcomed us so openly and that I am now proud to call home. So here I am nearly five years later beginning another chapter of my life, my year as Rummel Creek PTA President. I look forward to the experience.
The school’s theme this year is Planting Seeds...Growing Minds. In keeping with that message, the PTA tag line will be Learning in Full Bloom. With only three weeks of summer vacation left many PTA committees have are hard at work getting ready for the start of school. School supplies are being delivered today, the Newcomer’s committee is gearing up, the website is being updated and more activities are underway. There are volunteer opportunities available that will be described in your child’s back-to-school packet. Not only is volunteering a great way to enhance the programs offered by the school district, it is also a great way to meet people. Everyone is welcome to give whatever time they have available.
The biggest event sprouting up this year is The Tree Hugger’s Ball, our biennial auction party. Mark your calendar for Saturday February 12th. Come have some fun and toss around the green stuff so we can “help our RCE saplings grow into mighty oaks”. The auction committee has been hard at work since the spring. There will be more details to follow, but if you can’t wait to get your hands dirty contact Kerry Latiolais at kerrylatiolais@hotmail.com.
I am ready to start the school year. I look forward to the opportunity to work with our wonderful teacher’s, the staff and eager volunteer corps that cover our campus.
Sincerely,
Marnie Vandenburg
2010-2011 PTA President
