Welcome back to a year of good learning and (hopefully) good health!
I just wanted to remind you of a few things to help you and your child begin the school year smoothly:

  1. Routine- Begin as soon as you can so that you and your child do not experience “return to school shock”! Begin reasonable bedtimes and ease your child to the time he’ll need to arise so that he’ll have time to get ready and have breakfast before school. Tummies take awhile to get onto the school schedule, so prepare!
  2. Medications at school- Please take the time to read in the student handbook (p.H-14) about the rules that apply to medications at school. SBISD policies are very clear so that we can protect our students, and they will be enforced. Please cooperate so that needed medication can be provided while your child is at school.
  3. HELP ME WITH HEALTH SCREENINGS, PLEASE! We will begin to screen all of our students after Labor Day on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, from 8:10- 10:15 (approximately). The State of Texas mandates vision, hearing, and type 2 diabetes screening for all students in PK, K, 1st, 3rd and 5th grades, and all new students. At RCE, with volunteer help, we are able to screen all of our students. It is a great way to get to know our students and faculty if you are new to the school…and you can consider me your friend for life if you come to volunteer! I do need your help to make all go smoothly, and to minimize the amount of time that I take your children out of class. We do discover and refer many students who cannot see well, and a smaller number of students with hearing issues. It is good to begin the new school year, knowing that all of our students are able to see and hear all of the important learning that will take place in their classrooms.
  4. Children with health issues- Please let me know how I can help your student with any health issues that may be accompanying them to school. Call me at the school so we can discuss your student’s particular needs. If your child is injured significantly outside of school, having surgery, has a chronic condition that may effect them at school, has severe allergies, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!! I will be happy to help you and your child’s teacher plan for a safe and healthy school year.
  5. As your children grow, please donate their outgrown RCE T shirts, and athletic shorts to the clinic to use with our students who need a change of clothing to get through their day! I especially need clothing for 4th and 5th graders
  6. Mosquitoes and water bottles- It will be very HOT for the first few weeks of school, also, buggy. Consider sending a water bottle with your child every day, because they will be active and hot! Also, consider sending mosquito repellant (please, only PUMP  or towelettes…NOT aerosol sprays). We do have students who are allergic to DEET in insect sprays, and do not want them exposed. Parents must sign permission form for their child and provide mosquito repellant for use at school.
  7. Please remember that RCE stocks NO over the counter medications. Parents must provide medications they want given to their child.

I look forward to seeing you soon!    Karen
